The Brief
Our team was brought in to carry out the controlled reduction of a traditional outbuilding at Langton Hall, a rural estate in Little Langton, North Yorkshire. The structure in question was a gin gang – a type of horse-powered engine house historically used for threshing grain, commonly found on North Yorkshire farmsteads.
The building was in a state of disrepair and required careful demolition, with particular attention given to its close proximity to the main hall.
Key project challenges
The primary challenge on this outbuilding demolition project was the location of the structure itself – positioned directly to the rear of the main hall, meaning all works had to be carried out carefully to avoid any impact on the adjacent building.
The construction of the gin gang also required a methodical approach. The building comprised:
- Brick walling and columns forming the structural base
- Long timber joists, purlins and battens
- A slate tile roof
Each element needed to be carefully dismantled and managed to ensure safe and compliant waste removal throughout.
Demolition Services Provided
Our experienced team carried out the full demolition and clearance of the outbuilding, including:
- Careful reduction of the brick column structure
- Removal of timber joists, purlins and battens
- Stripping and removal of slate roof tiles
- Full site clearance on completion
Waste skips for this project were provided by our sister company, Foxhall Environmental, making this a joint project across the Foxhall Group. As always, we aimed to minimise environmental impact through responsible waste disposal and recycling wherever possible.
A comprehensive risk assessment and methodology statement were produced prior to works commencing, ensuring safety and compliance throughout.
